As a toddler on the sidelines watching his father coach the local high school team, Johan Momsen picked up the rugby ball and never let go.
At 6 years old, Momsen began playing for Paarl Gimnasium in Paarl, South Africa. He played throughout his time in school competitively, until 2013 when Momsen accepted an offer to play at the Provincial level (U18-U21). He captained several games for the Western Province (U19-U21) throughout 2014 and 2015.
An avid scholar and skilled athlete, Momsen accepted an offer to play for the Stellenbosch Maties in 2016. During his time at Stellenbosch, they competed and won in the 2017 Varsity Cup. After a triumphant 2018 season, Momsen was named Captain and led the Maties to another successful season in 2019. During this time, Momsen was also named the Western Province Club Player of the Year. He received his first professional contract in 2019 with the Griquas and competed in the Currie Cup. Momsen accepted an offer from Rugby ATL in 2019, eager to learn from the coaching staff and help continue to grow rugby in the U.S.
When is isn’t playing rugby, Momsen enjoys golfing and playing videogames with his teammates.
